New TV Remote Storage

We've moved the TV remote controls to the drawer with the headphones behind the front desk because it appears that the magnets on the old storage bin are not strong enough.

When you open or close the Library please place the remotes back in this drawer for storage so we all know where to find them.

Thanks!

AVONDALE CHRISTMAS GIFT TREE

The Avondale Christmas Tree will go up on Monday November, 23 in the Library.

Each ornament on the tree has an Avondale student's gift wish list on it and students, faculty, and staff of MCCN and MCHS are encouraged to take an ornament and buy a gift for an Avondale student.

The Library is responsible for the project this year, and it will require a lot of careful organization. Instruction sheets will be placed at both front desk computers detailing what to do when someone takes an ornament from the tree.

The MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO MAKE SURE YOU GET THE FULL NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION OF THE PERSON WHO TAKES THE ORNAMENT.

The ornaments will be hung in pairs, one red, one green for each student. The gift buyer should TAKE THE RED ORNAMENT WITH THEM and FILL OUT THE GREEN ORNAMENT COMPLETELY & TURN IT IN AT THE FRONT DESK. Step by step instruction handouts will also be at the desk and should be given to each person who takes an ornament.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that this is done correctly;  please let Allison know if ANYTHING is unclear.

Food for Fines has Started!

Food for Fines is currently underway and will run through December 31st, 2015

Food for Fines allows Library patrons to 'pay off' outstanding Library fines on their account by donating non-perishable food items instead of paying money.

HOW IT WORKS

1 food item = $3.00 in fines

up to $30 in fines can be paid off with food

Food for Fines transactions can ONLY be completed between 8AM -5PM M-F when a permanent Library staff member is present.

If someone brings in food items for this purpose, ask Allison or Noreen (or Ken if we aren't here yet) to process the transaction.

BE SURE TO MAKE A MARK, USING PERMANENT MARKER, ON THE BOTTOM OF EACH ITEM BEFORE PLACING IT ON THE DISPLAY TABLE.

PAPER CUTTER

The paper cutter that was in the copy room for student use no longer works. Please DO NOT LEND OUT the paper cutter in the staff workroom - it has been moved out of site and is ONLY to be used by Library staff in order to extend the life of the blade and ensure that it does not end up broken.

We are in the process of ordering a replacement paper cutter for patron use; in the meantime, we can lend out the two pairs of scissors that are kept at the front desk.

Item Check-in Reminder

When books are returned, be sure that you are on the CHECK-IN SCREEN when you scan the items, and double check that the item appears on the screen before moving it to the shelving cart or re-shelving closed reserves.

Also, please be aware that some items contain CD/DVD discs that need to be scanned separately. A message should appear on the screen alerting you to the presence of the disc. Check the inside front and back covers for CD/DVDs EVERY TIME THIS MESSAGE APPEARS.

LAPTOP UPDATE:

We have recently had a few students lose their documents when using Library laptops. When using the laptops, ALL documents need to either be saved to an external drive or in Google Docs; documents saved anywhere on the laptops themselves will automatically be deleted when the laptops go to sleep, are logged off, or are shut down.

We are in the process of adding a sticker to each laptop indicating this, but please also make patrons aware of this when they check out the laptops.

'Away from the Desk' Sign

If you are working alone during an evening or Saturday shift and need to leave the desk for a few moments (to use the restroom, etc.), there is a sign to place in front of the primary computer indicating that you will return shortly.

The sign is on a small plastic stand and is kept in the cubby area directly behind the front desk phone. Please place it on the desk in front of the computer when you need to step away and put it back in the cubby when you return.

Meeting Minutes Posted on LibGuide

We had our Fall meeting on November 2nd and for those who were not able to attend, we have posted the minutes on the 'Quarterly Meetings' tab above.

The text of the minutes is displayed on the page and a downloadable document is also available. If you were not able to attend the meeting, please take a few moments to review the minutes.

Update on Library Printing

ALL public printing in the Library has been suspended.

The cartridges have been removed from both the 3rd and 4th floor printers and they are turned off.

All students wishing to print should be referred to the 2nd floor MCCN computer lab; issues with paper supply, printer functionality, and passwords should be referred to MCCN HelpLine at 401-6226

4th Floor Library Entrance

Please do not use the 4th floor library door as a regular library entrance--this is a directive from MCW Security Services.

DO NOT share the door code with those who do not work at the library.

This entrance is only to be used under the following special circumstances:

1. People who are physically unable to use the stairs

2. Taking the library shelving carts or other large library materials to the 4th floor

CHECK OUT THE NEW FRONT DESK CODEX!!

The front desk codex has been entirely updated and redesigned. It used to reside in the blue folder with a clear cover near each computer.

The NEW CODEX is in a black binder at each front desk computer station and contains ANSWERS TO MANY COMMON QUESTIONS asked at the front desk.

It includes IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS, COMPUTER LOGINS, A TEXTBOOK LIST, BARCODE INFORMATION and more.

Please take a few minutes during your shift to familiarize yourself with the new codex and check there for answers before deferring to Library staff.

REMEMBER TO USE YOUR RESOURCES WHEN PRESENTED WITH A NEW QUESTION.

LIBRARY LAPTOPS

BE SURE TO CHECK LAPTOPS IN & OUT BOTH IN SIERRA AND ON THE LAPTOP LOAN AGREEMENT FORM

We have had a growing number of laptops not being checked in properly, which creates confusion when closing the library and when laptops are checked out again to another patron.

DO NOT FORGET TO SIGN THE FORMS IN THE DRAWER!

We also have a NEW EXTENDED CHECK-OUT FORM: It is on bright green paper and should be used anytime someone wants to keep a laptop BEYOND THE END OF THE DAY.
This will signal those who are closing the library that these laptops are on extended loan.

Please ask NOREEN or ALLISON to complete ANY EXTENDED CHECK OUT.

NO EXTENDED CHECK-OUTS CAN BE INITIATED DURING EVENING AND WEEKEND SHIFTS WHEN REGULAR LIBRARY STAFF ARE NOT PRESENT.

IMPORTANT: PRINTING POLICY

As I'm sure you've all heard, Library policy does NOT allow printing of MCCN course materials on our printers.

Despite heavy signage and continued communications, this policy is being continually violated.

DO NOT refill the public printers for printing of course materials. ONLY provide paper, in small quantities, for printing articles, abstracts, CE certificates and short personal documents.

NEVER PUT AN ENTIRE REAM IN THE PAPER TRAYS.

After hours and on weekends, if you prefer, you may tell students who ask about printing that you do not have access to the paper supply.

Reminders about Article Searching:

  • Only PDF files can be sent on to requesters; be sure that you have accessed and saved a PDF, not HTML document
  • Be sure to check ALL THREE places for an article before marking as un-filled:
      • PubMed
      • EBSCO Full Text Finder
      • Mount Carmel catalog (for print format)
  • If you aren't sure what one or more of these are or how to access them, check the instructions in the folder at the front desk and/or ask Allison for a refresher

Nighttime Security Escorts

If you are working late at the Library, MCW Security officers will escort you to your vehicle or dorm for safety.

Just call 234-5283 about half an hour before you will be leaving and they will arrange to meet you in a designated location.

Fall Break is Right Around the Corner

October 12-16

Hours worked do not count in the overall total of your work schedule.

What does that mean?

You don't have to come in to work your regular schedule.  BUT, we still need people, especially from 5-9, Monday-Thursday.

If you have hours to make up, let Noreen know ASAP.  You can even send your available times in this comment section!  Thanks!

After Hours Article Requests

If a Customer Wants to Request an Article After 5p.m.

  • Advise the customer that the person responsible for article requests has left for the day and will be able to take the request on the next business day.
  • There are several options for submitting the request:
    • Take down the citation information and leave it on Allison's desk (there is a paper request form in the WSS folder at the front desk)
    • Direct the customer to the online request form
    • Have the customer email the information to library.mchs.com

We cannot take same day rush requests after 5p.m.

Beware of Scam Phone Calls

We have been receiving an increasing number of scam and phishing phone calls at the Library main phone number.

Common topics of the scams are:

Columbia Gas account
Copier model numbers
Moving to a new location

NEVER provide any information about our equipment, location, utilities, etc. over the phone.

If anyone asks for this kind information, transfer the call to Allison or Noreen.

After hours, tell the caller that the responsible person is not here and transfer the call so that they may leave a voicemail.

Reminder to Record Statistics

Remember to record every interaction you have with a customer in LibAnalytics.
